Are you using the Internet to its potential?
Here's how maintenance professionals use the Internet.

  1. The biggest use of the Internet is carrying messages or E-mail. In one study 80% of the business uses of the Internet was for E-mail.
  2. Find vendors of everything from valves to engineering services. This is the second dominant use for the Internet after E-mail.
  3. Technical bulletins: The latest technical problem and fixes can be available minutes after the vendor's engineers decide to put it on-line.
  4. Drawings, field modifications, and manuals. Wouldn't that be great at 3 am when you can't find the wiring diagram?
  5. Parts information, parts purchasing, reducing the cost of acquisition. Go to parts vendors and manufacturer’s sites
  6. Commerce: This is an expansion of the idea above. You can currently shop for many MRO items from storefronts on the Internet.
  7. FAQ (frequently asked questions): In every field and on many pieces of equipment there are FAQ's. FAQ's are on line and available 24 hrs a day, when you have a question.
  8. Technical help: You can ask questions of the vendor's technical departments and get answers to solve your problems.
  9. Locate used equipment and parts.
  10. Software updates, patches and bug fixes go to the software manufacturer.
  11. For lists of installers and vendors check manufacturer’s sites.
  12. Access to library: Many university libraries and the library of Congress are available on-line. A group is making available the complete texts of great books available.
  13. User groups for CMMS owners who want to talk to owners? Here you can read other's comments about the software, ask questions of the whole group, and get help.
  14. Newsgroups: These are groups that are bound by a common love, hate, or interest. Topics range from collectors of stamps to people who hate politicians or love anagrams.
